| Waverley Shul and Chabad of Savoy have taken the first step towards a potential merger, signing a Memorandum of Understanding that could see the two Johannesburg Jewish communities join forces. Though the details are still being worked out, the proposed merger could lead to the creation of a community campus. Rabbi Gabi Bookatz, the rabbi of Waverley Shul, explained that this began as an idea many years ago, but, given the changes in the Johannesburg Jewish community, this was the time for the two shuls to join forces. |

| More than 500 students and community members attended Rosh Hashanah services, holiday meals and celebrations hosted by Chabad of Tallahassee and Florida State University, according to organizers, reflecting what leaders say is growing participation in the local Jewish community. The attendance pushed the organization to capacity, requiring additional tables, chairs and seating space. "There is no better problem for a Jewish community to have than needing more tables, more chairs, and more space because more people want to be part of it," said Rabbi Schneur Z. Oirechman. |

| Rabbi Menachem Mendel Kot, together with his wife Rachel and their family, is moving to Gomel, Belarus, where they will serve as Chabad emissaries, and Rabbi Kot will assume the role of the Jewish community’s chief rabbi. Rabbi Kot is the son of the Chief Rabbi of Estonia, Shmuel Kot, continuing a family tradition of dedicated Jewish communal service. | On a warm day in Taiwan last week, dozens of bearded rabbis walked slowly in a circle around the grounds of a new cemetery on a forested hillside outside Taipei. Until recently, a Jew who died in the island country would have to be flown abroad to be buried in a Jewish cemetery. The consecration ritual, conducted by a group of Chabad emissaries, set the stage for local Jewish burial in a country that has seen a surge in Jewish life in recent years. |

| MyWalk4Friends is Friendship Circle of Cleveland’s major fundraiser, with funds supporting programs for children with social needs, their families and teen volunteers. Eli Shomer, development director at Friendship Circle of Cleveland, said the organization serves about 550 families and credited the community for making those programs possible. Friendship Circle Executive Director Yossi Marozov also thanked the community for supporting the organization’s mission and encouraged participants to continue being there for its children, families and teen volunteers. |

| “Rosh Hashanah is the head of the Jewish year,” Rabbi Yossi Kagan said. “Like the head that runs the body, the whole year really goes off the head: this day. Children are such an integral part of the year, of the Jewish community [and] of our family, so they’re definitely going to be a big part of [the High Holidays].” The Kagans’ kids are an “integral part of every holiday.” They often pitch in to help set up for Chabad events, whether assembling chairs for services or peeling potatoes for Chanukah latkes. |

| The Rooftop at USC Chabad Jewish Student Center will offer students a hot, kosher meal option through their existing USC meal plans for the first time. On Monday through Thursday from 6 to 8:30 p.m., the restaurant will serve meals prepared under the supervision of a rabbi. Any student is eligible to use their standard meal swipes to receive a meal, just as they would at any dining hall. “We wanted to, as much as possible, replicate that experience of a university dining hall,” said Rabbi Dov Wagner, co-director of USC Chabad. |

| Rabbi Schneur Matusof and his wife, Sheina, moved from Issaquah, Washington, to Eden Prairie in early August with their four young children and no established congregation waiting for them. Chabad of Eden Prairie is beginning with Shabbat dinners in the family’s home, holiday gatherings in public spaces and classes and programs based on what people in the community say they want. “We’re not coming into town with a synagogue or even with a congregation that’s looking for a synagogue,” Matusof said. |

| I joined a busy, spiritual and unusual day with Rabbi Menachem Lazar - Chabad emissary in the Italian capital and brother of the Chief Rabbi of Russia, Rabbi Berel Lazar - to understand firsthand what missionary work looks like in the heart of the Italian city during the most stressful and emotional moments of the year. “These weeks before Tishrei are always a race,” said Rabbi Lazar with a calm smile, which is in stark contrast to his busy schedule.
